Camera Pros: In its most basic form, it’s light enough to mount on a gimbal or large drone.
It has a slightly taller sensor that the other DSMC2 cameras.
Will record proxy files simultaneously to the same card. But requires you to compromise on Raw compression.
You can shoot in HDRx mode which extends the dynamic range by shooting two images with different exposures. Magic Motion is a postproduction process which combines the two images, resulting in a higher dynamic range and more natural looking motion blur.
Interchangeable OLPFs (Optical Low-Pass Filters).
Camera Cons: RED’s own recording media is expensive. Jinni Tech make alternative mini SSDs for RED cameras and the JinniBay module for recording on standard size SSDs. While not endorsed by RED, the mini SSDs are guaranteed. Shooting at a lower resolution crops the sensor, reducing the field of view. There’s a handy Crop Factor calculator on the RED website.
Unique Features: The best of the bunch for low light performance.
Notes: You'll need to specify a full production kit when you rent. The basic RED brain doesn't have a battery plate, monitor or control surface. The GEMINI is from the current DSMC2 range. There’s two other cameras you might want to consider. The Dragon-X has a 17:9 5K sensor and lacks the low light performance of the GEMINI. And there’s the Raven with a 4.5K resolution. Your rental house might offer you an older camera as an alternative. Previous DSMC2 and DSMC models are still excellent and likely to be cheaper to hire. So you could consider the Weapon, the Dragon or the Scarlet. Confirm it has the resolution you need.
